What materials are used to make the insulation layer and sheath layer of high temperature aircraft cable?



In the field of aerospace, the temperature environment is complex and changeable. When an aircraft flies to an altitude of 10,000 meters, the local temperature around the engine can reach hundreds of degrees. Under this high temperature, the molecular structure of ordinary insulating materials softens and deforms, and the molecular chain breaks, resulting in a significant reduction in insulation performance, which in turn causes circuit short circuit or leakage problems, seriously threatening flight safety. The radiation cross-linked ETFE insulation layer relies on its high-temperature resistant chemical structure to maintain stable physical and chemical properties in a high-temperature environment. The fluorine atoms in the ETFE molecule have strong electronegativity, and the C-F bond formed has high bond energy. The chemical bond is not easy to break at high temperatures, thus continuously providing reliable insulation protection for the cable. Its operating temperature range can reach - 65℃~200℃ (the operating temperature range of tinned conductor wires and cables is - 65℃~150℃), whether it is the low-temperature high-altitude stratosphere or the high-temperature engine compartment environment, it can meet the operating requirements of aerospace equipment. ​
In terms of electrical insulation performance, radiation cross-linked ETFE insulation material performs excellently. There are many precision electronic instruments in aerospace equipment, which have extremely high requirements for current stability and purity. Minor electrical interference may cause instrument failure and affect system operation. The non-polar characteristics of the ETFE molecular structure limit the movement of electrons inside the material, reduce the possibility of current leakage, effectively isolate external electromagnetic interference, and ensure that the cable transmits electrical signals stably and accurately. In addition, the radiation cross-linking process cross-links the ETFE molecular chains to form a three-dimensional mesh structure, which enhances the strength, hardness and flexibility of the material. When the material is squeezed and stretched by external force, the three-dimensional mesh structure can disperse the stress and ensure the integrity and reliability of the insulation layer. The sheath layer of high temperature aircraft cable must have properties such as high temperature resistance, wear resistance, radiation resistance and chemical corrosion resistance. In the space environment, spacecraft are subjected to strong cosmic radiation such as high-energy particles and rays, and the molecular structure of ordinary materials will be destroyed, aging and brittleness will occur. ETFE sheaths can resist ionizing radiation in space due to their special molecular structure. They can still work normally and maintain flexibility under a radiation dose of 5x10^7Rad. They meet NASA-SP-R-0022 aerospace standards and ensure the service life and performance of cables in space environments. ​
In terms of wear resistance and mechanical strength, irradiated cross-linked ETFE sheath materials have significant advantages. The internal space of aerospace equipment is compact, and cable wiring is complex. It is easy to cause friction and collision with other components during installation and use. When laying cables inside aircraft, they need to pass through equipment gaps and bypass mechanical components, and friction and collision will continue during long-term flight. ETFE molecular chains are highly crystallized and tightly arranged. The surface hardness and wear resistance of the material are high. It can withstand large friction and impact forces, and can effectively protect the internal conductors and insulation layers of the cable to ensure the normal operation of the cable. ​
In terms of chemical resistance, ETFE sheath materials perform well. In the field of aerospace, cables will come into contact with a variety of chemicals such as aqueous solutions, acids and alkalis, fuels, and lubricants. In the daily maintenance and operation of aircraft, fuel leakage and the use of detergents may corrode cables. When ordinary materials are corroded by chemical substances, chemical reactions will occur and their performance will decrease. However, the shielding effect formed by fluorine atoms in ETFE molecules makes it chemically inert and can resist chemical corrosion under high temperature and high humidity conditions, maintain its own structure and performance stability, and provide long-term and reliable protection for cables. ​
